Discover Montalcino: Tuscany’s Hidden Gem

Views from Tuscan city of Montalcino

Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Montalcino is a charming hilltop town that perfectly blends history, breathtaking scenery, and fantastic wine. Known as the birthplace of Brunello di Montalcino, one of Italy’s most renowned wines, this picturesque town is a must-see for anyone looking for phenomenal wine tasting, scenic views, and the peace and quiet of a small medieval town in the Tuscan countryside.

A Town Steeped in History

Perched atop a hill with sweeping views of the Tuscan countryside, Montalcino exudes medieval charm.

Its well-preserved walls and historic architecture transport visitors back to the 13th century when the town flourished under the Republic of Siena. Walking through its narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll find ancient churches, cozy cafes, and artisan shops offering handcrafted goods and local delicacies.

Don’t Miss:

  • Fortezza di Montalcino (Montalcino Fortress): Built in 1361, this fortress provides panoramic views of the surrounding vineyards and rolling hills. They offer wine tasting inside the fortress. You can also climb to the top of the walls for the best photo opportunities.

  • Sant’Antimo Abbey: My personal favorite! A short drive from Montalcino, this Romanesque abbey is a serene spot with stunning architecture and Gregorian chants echoing through its stone halls. This is one of the highlights for many of my clients.

Wine tasting: Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino

Montalcino is for red wine lovers. It is known for 2 great red wines: Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino.

  1. Rosso di Montalcino is made from Sangiovese grapes from Montalcino, and is not required to be aged more than a year. It spends less time in oak, so it's less tannic, lighter, fruitier, and drinks well upon release. You can find bottles of Rosso di Montalcino in the $20 to $30 range.

  2. Brunello di Montalcino is a more robust red wine made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. Brunello is aged  for a minimum of four years. In fact, it is aged longer than any other Tuscan wine before it is released. Two years have to be in cask or barrel—and three years in oak if you're a traditionalist and/or making a Riserva. This contributes to the flavor, and also the price tag! These wines can be pricy, often costing $100 per bottle or more.

2 Delicious Local Specialities to Try!

No trip to Montalcino is complete without indulging in the region’s culinary delights.

Be sure to try:

  • Pici Pasta: A handmade "chubby spaghetti" often served with rich meat or mushroom sauces.

  • Tuscan Pecorino Cheese: Perorino is cheese made from sheep’s milk cheese. They are different flavors and all of them are absolutely divine!
